Preparing for your Session
by Adriana Tomeu
Your headshot should be your essence. Make the most of your session by taking your look and preparation seriously. Show the auditioners that your headshot and career matter to you.
The most important factor is to consider your character type. What is your brand? What do you want the auditioners to see when they look at your headshot? Are you going for youth? Leading man? Girl-next-door? Consider your age range and match your wardrobe to your type.
Cut and color matter. Make sure your wardrobe is neat, and that your clothing choices are fitted and wrinkle-free. Avoid distracting necklines and clashing patterns.
For females and especially dancers, solid tank tops usually work very well if you want to present yourself as a blank canvas. Show off the collarbones with an off-the-shoulder. Choose things that fit your body type and highlight you. For males, think outside the box of the solid V-neck. Those are great, but sometimes it works against the individuality that is you. You can have a clean look and bring something that is more tailored to your marketed style. Again, really think about your brand. Avoid being too specific. Keep your character type in mind, but avoid overdressing and costuming.
Bring options! Heck, bring a suitcase even. Every look you bring should tell a different story about you, not just be a different color T-shirt. Bring more than you need, and when you get to your session, we can collaborate to find what is best. For more ideas, take a look at my headshot gallery to see what others have worn.
Keep it light and natural. The goal is to make your natural beauty glow and to create a luminous image of you. Eyeliner usually looks too heavy unless done really well. Keep lip color light and neutral, with a bit of shine if you want. Focus on the eyes.
Depending on the region we are shooting in, I have makeup gurus that will take any headshot of yours to the next level. All of the headshots I’ve done with their makeup artistry turn out amazingly. Ask me for a referral.
Neat and natural-looking. Styled to your type. A good idea is to bring hairspray and a brush.
The best shots are going to come when you're the most comfortable in your own skin!! Bring a playlist that makes you feel like dancing like no one's watching, clothes that make you feel like a million bucks, and the openness to PLAY!
